On July 14, France celebrated Bastille Day with fireworks and a large military parade. The ceremonial marked the anniversary of the storming of a large fortress holding political prisoners, a sign of the French Revolution in Paris in 1789.
At that time, France faced a long drought that resulted in a lack of food supply while being squeezed by high taxes, as a solution to Louis XVI's debt. The tyrant at that time was indeed heating up.
Louis XVI, who was worried about trying to quell a political revolution that was at the time boiling. However, the revolutionary army took the fight with the invasion to loot weapons.
On July 14, 1789, marches were made to the Hôtel des Invalides to loot firearms and cannons from revolutionary forces.
In addition, there was also an invasion of the Bastille prison to pillage ammunition and hunt for gunpowder. The hunt for gunpowder, was originally the main reason for the invasion of the Bastille - not the release of political prisoners.
Deadly fighting took place in Bastille, even the prison governor and his officers were beheaded. This is a side effect of a chaotic rebellion and not its main intention.
"When there was news at Versailles that people had invaded the Bastille, the royal family thought that this was a disaster because people were out of control," Edelstein told the Times website.
Louis XVI asked the French duke that night whether the Bastille invasion was a rebellion? then the Duke replied, "No, Sire, a revolution."
The event strengthened the political significance of the revolution and the idea of invading Bastille as a demonstration against political tyranny, not violence. Feudalism was abolished in August since then.
A year later, France hosted the Fête de la Fédération on July 14 to celebrate France's constitutional monarchy and to honor France's newly discovered unity.
That union, known as the French Revolution.
July 14 will not be considered an official holiday until nearly a century later.
"If there is a shot that sounds' round the world," said Edelstein, "that's when Paris drops Bastille."
